The project topic is connected to the concept of a contemporary dance and choreographing centre. It explores the spatial relationships that are being generated through movement due to the interaction of subject and space.
The dance centre is located in the region of Ioannina, at the island of the lake that exists there. When the visitor gets there, he can follow a path that goes around the island. The characteristic of this route is that at the western part, reed clusters define the sight, therefore the visitor can only have the view of specific frames of the city.
The main concern of our project has been the repair of the relationship between the town and the island. Although the peninsula of the castle “is trying to reach” the island, the settlement “turns it’ s back” to the facade of the town.
We locate the building at the section of the horizontal axis of the view, between the castle and the island, and of the perimetric path of the island. This effort tries to complete a circle that is constituted from the boat’s route, the lakeside walk and the visual relationship between the town and the island.
We propose two separate units, one for the public (exhibition galleries, theatre, cafe, etc.) and one for private use (residence of dancers, rehearsal space etc.). These units are being ruptured from lakeside path.
The two units have been structured by different kinesthetic principles. A linear movement organizes the private space while at the public one, a choreographed movement of the body takes the visitor on a journey around the spaces of the centre while the ramps force the axis of the body to incline.
The project not only explores the movement strategies but also the manipulation of sight, light, materials, acoustic atmosphere that is caused by the rain and the wind that plays around the reed clusters and other elements that are creating the atmosphere of the space.
