Astypalaia. Necropolis.
Enchytrisme. The word originates from the Greek word hytra, the open vessel made of clay for cooking, and was the most usual way of burying newborn infants in the ancient times. A universally unique finding – a vast collection of enchytrismes originates today from Astypalaia. The ancient necropole of dead infants, that was excavated at the border of the old settlement –the Chora, constitutes a unique graveyard of thousand burials in clay vessels, positioned over shallow ditches dug on the rocky side of the yet un-built area of the hill, where the medieval castle predominates. A strong narration during space and time, appears to be ignored by the contemporary residential site, being in conflict with it, along with the natural landscape.
The purpose of this dissertation is the receipt of this narration from the residential site and its natural landscape, attempting a new balance between them. The idea of vineyards, like a green carpet structured on a grid, a site of life, from the central entrance of the residential site and on the way to the archaeological site of the necropole, along with the idea of the black sheet of iron within its digestion in the dark ground of the natural site, against the white of the residential area, are reshaping the gate of the contemporary residency and show the pathway to something else, that has nothing to do with white and life, but with the ground and death. A way, not pompous or ceremonial, that simply shows to a city of dead uncommon, conversing for a death of non life with the most simple and plain way.

CV
Pafili Maria
Born in Athens in 1983. Her love for drawing and painting, drove her to School of Architecture of NTUA, where she graduated in 2011. In her studies' frame, visited Barcelona, Alexandria, Tokyo, Berlin, Venice - for the 10th International Architecture Exhibition of Biennale entitled "Cities. Architecture & Society", and attended the International Architectural Conference "New trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia-Pacific 2006-2007" held in Patra, the Cultural Capital of Europe for the year 2006.
Her research essay, entitled "Relics...", concerned the course through history of the settlement of Astypalaia's island, in the Aegean sea, to the current, both culturally and socially, idle situation. Following, her thesis entitled “Astypalaia. Necropolis” focused on the preservation of the ancient infant cemetery excavated in 1995, a universally unique finding of which the modern society seems to be totally oblivious. She had the chance to present the proposal on the 3rd lecture of the cycle "Tours with the Archeological Service" at the Association of Greek Archaeologists.
Since June 2011, she works for the group TeMP architects, based in Athens, upon the design and construction of residential and commercial projects, so far, while attending architectural competitions, lectures and exhibitions of architecture and art.

Gialama Vassiliki
She was born in Athens in 1982. She graduated from the school of architecture of N.T.U.A. in 2011. Her thesis entitled ‘Remains’ was a painstaking research concerning the evolution of the settlement of Astypalaia to the current degenerating, both culturally and socially, idle situation through the perusal of history in a wider geographical range. The ancient infant cemetery, a universally unique finding which was discovered in Astypalaia in 1995 and of which the modern settlement seems to be totally oblivious, constituted the main topic of the thesis entitled “Astypalaia. Necropolis” aiming at integrating it into the settlement and the natural environment , the connection of all the above mentioned as well as highlighting the finding. She had the chance to present the proposal on the 3rd lecture of the cycle "Tours with the Archeological Service" at the Association of Greek Archaeologists.
She is working as a freelance having taken on the study of small range works .Meanwhile she has taken part in several national architectural competitions.
