The current diploma project constitutes a research held on the problems the contemporary urban landscape of Athens is dealing with. A fundamental role in its formation has been played by the building type of polykatoikia. Smaller or larger, in the centre or the suburbs, it has constituted the basic means of producing space. But does this space correspond to the needs of contemporary society? A group of this building type is, therefore, chosen to be analyzed (construction period: 1955-1983). After identifying their common problems, the research hypothesis is being set: is there the possibility of designing a gene-type intervention on these buildings, which, adjusted to the specific characteristics of each unit, contributes to the solution of these problems? The method of intervening is, thus, being designed, realized by extending the closed, communal space of the staircase to the facades of the building and creating a flowing, public space. Altering among consecutive plans and surrounded by curved, green walls, this space actually reflects the repositioning of nature in the shell of polykatoikia. This gesture is applied on a building unit and the research concludes to the evaluation of the suggested intervention method, having as criteria its reliability, validity and replicability. The presentation of the project is completed with a model of the building in scale 1:50. Due to the dynamic character of the intervention, a conceptual, rather than a realistic way of representation is chosen. Therefore, the housing area, the private space, is shown with a transparent material, with details, such as the equipment and materiality, being carved on it. Thus, the created public space in the inner of the building, represented in white, is being outlined. At the same time, emphasis is given on the curved, green walls, which define the character of this new space and create interesting relations of light and shadow.

CV
Antiopi Koronaki was born in 1988 in Rethymno, Crete. She earned her master in Architecture-Engineering in October 2012, from N.T.U.A., Athens, with a grade of 8,62/10. During the academic year 2010-2011 she studied as an exchange student in E.T.S.A.B., Barcelona. In collaboration with Prof. Fr. Lopez Almansa (E.T.S.A.B.) and V. Tsouras (N.T.U.A.) she wrote her thesis, on the design of a seismic resistant infill wall model ("W(a)ll done!", N.T.U.A., October 2011). The research on a gene-type of intervention in the building type of polykatoikia, its implementation and evaluation was the subject of her diploma project, which she completed under the supervision of As. Professors D. Papalexopoulos and A.Kourkoulas ("Polykatoikia is dead?Long live Polykatoikia!", N.T.U.A., October 2012). During her undergraduate studies she was awarded with scholarships for her academic performance. She was offered a place in the MSc in Emergent Technologies and Design in the AA School of Architecture, where she will undertake postgraduate studies in the academic year 2013-2014.
