The choice of the site was not accidental. The site is so unique because of a Mycenaean cemetery consisting of 20 carved tombs, which are dated from around 1600 to 1200 BC. It’s worth mentioning the special atmosphere of this place, mainly due to the way light enters the tombs.
Over an existing “residential complex” [namely the cemetery] we create a “new” one. The design of the winery complex is not aggressive towards the ancient monument but highlights it instead. The complex consists of two common spaces. One is the cemetery and the other is a sunken patio, a point of great importance. The relationship between them obeys the golden ratio. These two spaces can enroll in a square, so these two separate common spaces can be considered as one. The created buildings are: the winemaking building, the guesthouse with the reception and the restaurant and some smaller buildings which serve the purpose of the vineyard and the housing of seasonal employees.
An important point is the feeling of emergence which the visitor experiences as he approaches the winemaking building passing by a series of ramps which leads from the parking lot’s level to the sunken atrium’s one and then to the building. Before reaching the building the visitor meets a "landing" which gives him the opportunity to tour the site of the tombs.
Visitor throughout his tour in the complex is located between scales alien to his body. Namely between the “high relief” and the small scale details of the guesthouse.
