The aim of this project is to counter-act the ever-growing propensity to leave untouched and misunderstood ruined structures at the center of our growing cities. These historical remains, either grossly overprotected by preservation, or simply overlooked by the force of contemporary developments, are seldom engaged with in a constructive manner, an approach that posits itself in between these two extremes. In the wish to engage with the ruins of ancient Rome, specifically the colossal Baths of Caracalla, I proposed a contemporary re-use of the ruins for public bathing, providing for a physical re-engagement with history, one which would allow us to “plunge”, as it were, into the past. The project, in which a balance was sought between preservation, re-use and new addition, played on the idea that the space between a distant past and the present could be telescoped architecturally. The “new” baths became a site in which an intimate proximity between the Roman Empire and the Western Empire could be experienced, allowing us to reflect critically upon both the illustrious and somber aspects of our own society.

Iason Tsironis was born in Montreal, Canada in 1985. He received his Masters in Architecture from McGill University in 2011 and was inscribed into the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Honour Roll upon graduation. His thesis project entitled "I, Caracalla" was recognized with the Arcop Alcan Award for demonstrating particular sensitivity to the architectural and cultural traditions of its location. The project explores the contemporary potential of the ancient ruins of the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, Italy, by imagining a physical re-engagement with them. In 2012, Mr. Tsironis was awarded the Prix de Rome for Emerging Practitioners from the Canada Council for the Arts, in recognition of his master work and for his proposed research project: in the second half of 2013, he will travel throughout the ex-Soviet Union to visit Soviet architectural ruins and contemplate their potential in today's contexts. Iason has worked in London, England for the office of Caruso St John Architects and currently lives in Berlin, Germany where he works for David Chipperfield Architects.
