A cable structure for outdoor markets
2008
Undergraduate
ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT, PATRAS, GREECE
Professor(s): Katherine A. Liapi, Ph.D.
In this diploma study a novel cable structure for outdoor markets is proposed that addresses the above mentioned problems. The proposed structure is composed of compression members not-connected directly with each other but with cables forming a stable spatial system. This structure belongs to the general category of tensegrity structures and shares features with existing inventions (Fuller, Emmerich, Liapi) .With the addition of fabric cover elements on the main frame of the structure encloses usable space.
In addition, product display trays of various sizes can be securely attached on the frame of the structure .The strucrure can be easily erected and collapsed with a simple mechanism (by one person) and transported to place on a small vehicle .These features render the structure appropriate for the ephemeral character of outdoor markets.
According to the set objectives for the proposed design the structure should a) use the minimum possible number of compression elements, b) be of low cost c)will need no foundation and d) will be easily erected and collapsed. Furthermore, more than one unit structures can be combined in linear, radial and free combinations depending on the use, character and the place of the market.
