In contrast to the current ‘two-dimensional’ fragrance store model, Cabinet, expresses an unconventional proposal for the olfactory contact. A structure of suspended mobile cabinets, which have the ability to rotate within their systems, become the vessels that enclose the various scents. Apart from the element of curiosity such a framework would entail, the opening and closing of the cabinets by the users also allow for the eventual ‘escape’ and consequential fusion of the diverse scent particles. These ‘leaks’ in combination with the system’s mobility affect the spatial airflow by enabling mixtures or whiffs, which trigger memories, positive or negative reactions that ultimately affect circulation.
As this particular proposal is derived from the effort to create an environment which compliments the qualities of olfaction, a sense that is unseen but not unfelt it seems logical to create a ‘model’ which also compliments and captures the essence of the space. Not only the visible but also the invisible presence. The result is a conceptual model, which promotes interaction in order to serve its purpose. It takes the form of a smaller cabinet that contains scents within bottles, which can be poured upon a ceramic dipped plate placed on a spinning repurposed record player. The spinning creates air circulation allowing the smells to evaporate in the air creating blends and traces. Thus it creates curiosity, provokes interactivity, translates functionality and ultimately delivers scent in space.
CV
Born in Athens, Greece, Marilila started her creative education at London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design. Although still passionate about Graphics, her love for the tactile and three-dimensional drew her to pursue Interior Design. After a year at Istituto Marangoni London, she moved to New York to attend the Parsons MFA Interior Design program from which she graduated in 2012. Her diverse background and skills as well as her interest in multiple fields of study have informed and inspired a multidisciplinary Design approach evident in her work from concept through to creation. She is currently working as a designer in New York City.
