The methodology of the process is visualized as a dynamic diagram. Certain architectural notions (porosity, fluid circulation, function of metro station, context) constitute the starting points. Taking the architectural notions through various digital and analog processes, we make certain observations that are used as the inputs for the dynamic model. The dynamic model is the heart of the dynamic diagram and works as a formula that computes a series of outputs from the interaction of the inputs.
Porosity reflects an intermediate spatial situation between the open air and the underground. There are many natural systems that create spaces with these spatial qualities. Studying the structural principles of the geological formation of Tafoni, the designers reproduce these spatial qualities through physical models. A lot of experiments were done until a physical prototype, made out of plaster and balloons filled with air, gives the structural and light/ventilation principles of the system.
Apart from the dynamic model’s technical report, it’s worth mentioning that the designers develop the architectural notions and make the observations of the several processes according to their architectural intentions. At this specific example, they seek to create a cavernous, porous underground complex, with fluid circulation in between the cavities and a certain level of complexity.
As far as it concerns the feeling of the underground experience, there is a desire of enhancing the contrasts between the above and the below ground. Unlike the clean and shiny spaces that we typically associate with, the “subnature” makes its appearance with dankness and mold.
CV
Maria Chiou is a young architect, currently based in Rotterdam. She was born in 1985 in Athens and grew up in Naxos, Greece. In 2011, she graduated with honors from the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has been moving around the world in an attempt to explore architecture and people. In 2008, she worked as a researcher at the National University of San Juan, in Argentina. Part of her studies were completed at Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture de Montpellier, in France. During her studies, she participated in various workshops and developed a systematic approach to design. The latest years, she has been practicing architecture working in different european architectural firms including Amid.cero9, in Madrid and Ooze, in Rotterdam. Together with her colleague, Dimitra Koroni, she received a special mention in the international competition "d3 Natural Systems 2011" and has been published and exhibited worldwide. In 2013, she launched porosion.net, a platform of architectural.
Dimitra Koroni was born in 1986, in Athens and grew up in Evia, Greece. She studied in the School of Architecture in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from which she graduated with honors, in 2011. She made part of her studies in the Facolta di Architettura, Universita degli Studi di Firenze, in Italy, as a scholar of the Erasmus exchange program. During her studies, she explored architecture using digital design tools and she participated in various workshops, conferences, exhibitions and architectural publications. In 2009, she earned the Iaeste scholarship and she carried out an internship at the architectural office Tendances, in Tunis. Later on, she enriched her professional experience working for the well known european architectural office Amid.cero9, in Madrid. In 2011, together with Maria Chiou, they were honored with a special mention in the international architectural competition "de Natural Systems" and they had their work exhibited in the Gallery NC, in New York. Since 2012, she has been working in the architectural office IJP Corporation, in London.
